Scope and Contents

The James H. Brickley papers is a collection of materials that documents Brickley's tenure as President of Eastern Michigan University. While not a complete record of his time in office, it is a sample of his adminitration and issues on campus during his tenure from 1975-1979.

Materials are organized into four primary series, Inaguration, Calendars, Clippings and News Releases, and Correspondence. Inaguration materials are organized in chronological order from planning to execution of the weekends events including a high school visit day, the inaguration, the inaguation luncheon and dance, a lecture series, and thank yous. Clippings related to Brickley's inaguration are in the Clippings and News Releases series. Calendars are also organized in chronological order and are the paper appointment calendars of Brickley by calendar year, with the exception of the 1978-79 school year which has an additional pocket calendar.

Clippings and News Releases are organized chronologically by year, with the the exception clippings and news releases related to the inaguration of Brickley. Those are separated into releases from the office of information services and clippings from campus and community news papers.

Correspondence is organized by college and includes correspondence to and from Brickley to administrators and faculty in the College of Arts and Science, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health Services (now College of Health and Human Services), and College of Technology. There are three files that relate to specific issues, College of Education New Detroit Bilingula-Bicultural Education Effort, College of Education Plymouth Schools Project, and an exchange between Brickley and Professor John W. Moore that was futher discussed by college administrators that highlighted a number of issues related to resource allocation on campus. Finally there is a single file with two greeting cards from Brickley Family.

Also included in the collection is a Football Magazine that highlights James Brickley, a report from the Presidential Commission, an Oral History Transcript with Brickley that was taken

Biographical note

James H. Brickley was born November 15, 1928 in Flint, Michigan and received both his bachelors and law degrees from the University of Detroit (1951, 1954), and master's degree from the University of New York (1958).

Brickley served as a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1954-58, then worked as a lawyer for the firm Shaheen, Gribbs, and Brickley in Detroit from 1959-62 and Councilman for the City of Detroit from 1962-1966. After serving the City of Detroit, Brickely served as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan and as Lieutenant Governor of Michigan from 1971-1974. Throughout Brickley taught as an adjunct faculty for the University of Detroit, Wayne State University, University of Michigan, and Cooley Law School, Lansing.

Brickley was appointed Eastern Michigan University President in 1975 and held the position until 1979. He returned to the office of Lieutenant Governor from 1979-1982. In 1982, he was appointed to replace retiring justice Mary S. Coleman on the Michigan Supreme Court and remained on the bench until 1999 when he was replaced by US Attorney Stephen Markman.

James Brickley died in October 2001. His daughter Kathleen Brickley, also an attorney, was appointed in 2011 circuit court judge in Van Buren County by Governor Rick Snyder.

Abstract

The James H. Brickley papers are materials collected during James 'Jim' H. Brickley's tenure as President of Eastern Michigan University. Included in the collection are materials related to his inaguration events, his appointment calendars, clippings and newsreleases, and correspondence between Brickley and the faculty as well as administrators of the various Colleges of the University. While not a complete record of his time in office, it is a sample look at the adminitration of the University and issues on campus during his tenure from 1975-1979.
