Greek Letter Organization papers

 Collection
Identifier: 04.GLO

Scope and Contents

The Greek Letter Organizations collection includes materials realated to various fraternal and sororal organizations at Eastern Michigan University, from 1911 to 2015. The bulk of the materials consists of press clippings and organizational documents pertaining to organization events, schedules, membership, pledge information, and ethics manuals.

The Greek Letter Organization collection has been divided, alphabetically, each named for the Greek Organization it represents, as well as a series titled "Greek Life," and another, "Greek Week." These latter series are then divdided into two subseries- Organizational Documents, and Press Clippings. In the case that the number of press clippings were few, they have been combined with any organizational documents of that particular Greek ogranization. The series Greek Week consists of materials pertaining to Greek Week on campus, while the series Greek Life consists of materials of general interest, such as information about the function of Greek organizations on campus.

Organizational documents include such materials as meeting minutes, event planning materials, brochures, pledge information, orientation materials, communications with EMU administration, budget records, alumni information, missions statements, and charters. Affiliation documents contain membership information, rosters, intake forms, and disaffiliation forms.

The strength of the Greek Letter Organization collection lies in its representation of fraternal/sororal life and function through various modes of technology, and its examination of Greek Life attitudes throughout the history of Eastern Michigan University. Universities are made up of subsets such as fraternal/sororal organizations, and by examining the values of this subset, one can gauge the prevailing attitudes of a significant portion of the student body. The weakness of this collection is that many of the organizations represented have very limited representation.

Abstract

Greek organizations have been a strong presence on the campus of Eastern Michigan University almost since the institution's inception, with the establishment of The Lyceum in the mid-1800's. Many other Greek organizations followed, and have ever since maintained an influence at EMU. This collection consists of records from a multitude of EMU fraternal and sororal organizations between the years of 1911 and 2015. Included documents include press clippings, and organizational documents such as brochures, missions statements, event postings, photographs, meeting minutes, record books, building plans, pledge qualifications, program plans and brainstorm notes, and affiliation records and rosters. The collection is arranged alphabetically by the names of the organizations.
