Scope and Contents

The University Relations created the Charter Schools Office at Eastern Michigan University in 1995, and since 1996 the Board of Regents have approved eight charter schools, with an approximate enrollment of 3500 students.

The Charter School Office records have been arranged by function, and include such materials as newspaper clippings, web site contents, Board of Regents recommendations, Charter School applications, and meeting notes. The materials are dated from approximately 1996 to 2010.

Administrative History

In 1993, the Michigan Legislature passed a charter school law allowing public universities to authorize and license charters for public school academies. The University Relations created the Charter Schools Office at Eastern Michigan University in 1995, and since 1996 the Board of Regents have approved eight charter schools, with an approximate enrollment of 3500 students.
